Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur has brilliantly written about consciousness in his book Jiva Dharma,  the occupation of the soul. He uses the analysis of water in its three states , liquid , steam and ice . Consciousness in its natural state flows instinctively towards Krishna in pure love and attraction. KRISHNA is all attractive,  but unless one by one’s own free will and free choice of love and attraction  recognise Him along with His glorious state ,  the consciousness becomes like ice , being fixed like stone in the material energies, or like steam , a merging of the consciousness in oneness and denying the Glories and quality of Krishna ,with an unwilling spirit to recipricate personally.
